What exactly is overdrive in a car and how does that effect mpg?

Is it better to drive with this on or will that drain more gas then just keeping your car in D all the time, and what is the deal with the other speeds I know this is a stupid question I have a guess it drains more gas if it's shifted up to 1 or 2 or overdrive is on.
