Can someone explain the ending of 'Avatar 2' to me?

So does Vin Diesel escape the Starship Diesel before it explodes? Or is he left aboard with Bruce Willis and Mike Tyson? Oh, and in the climax, why did Edward Norton need to use the parachute on Vin Diesel's pet giraffe? Seems like a pointless plot twist to me.
